Artificial intelligence most certainly is the hottest technology in health IT today. Most health systems have begun deploying systems with artificial intelligence components, at minimum in pilots. But it's still early days in the development and evolution of AI in healthcare.

Tom Kiesau is chief innovation officer and leader, digital and technology transformation, at Chartis, a prominent healthcare consulting firm. Kiesau has a long-term vision for AI's opportunity and promise in the industry.

That vision includes addressing the nation's rapidly aging population amid ever-increasing financial pressures, focusing on both clinical AI and operational AI, creating and evolving AI operating models and governance, and inventing different approaches to how healthcare is delivered because of AI's constantly advancing capabilities.

Here, in this week's HIMSSCast, Kiesau spells out that vision and explains why it's important to the future of AI in healthcare.

Talking points:

  • AI presents tremendous potential to drive the fundamental transformation that is needed in the healthcare system: to address the nation's rapidly aging population amid ever-increasing financial pressures.
  • How will AI be an essential ingredient in bending the macro healthcare cost curve?
  • There are two principal vectors for AI deployment, and both will need to be advanced to realize the promise of AI: clinical AI and operational AI.
  • How will AI evolve in both these domains?
  • How will health systems need to create and constantly evolve their AI operating model and governance to fully use AI, in light of the technical realities of AI as well as the emerging landscape of legal and ethical concerns?
  • 2024 saw a majority of health systems already piloting or scaling AI initiatives.
  • Meaningful industry impact will require entirely different approaches to how healthcare is delivered because of AI's constantly advancing capabilities.
