Manipal Hospitals has recently expanded its application of advanced AI and data analytics from Google Cloud to deliver upgrades in its pharmacy ordering and medication management and nurse handoff workflows.

It has implemented the ePharmacy platform, powered by Google's AI assistant, generative AI-driven Gemini, which streamlines prescription processing and ensures the accurate drug information transfer. It employs advanced visual analytics to monitor user behaviour and optimise cart management, delivery tracking, and ordering workflows. Additionally, it facilitates the flow of patients' post-consultation transaction data between disparate systems via cloud API.

The hospital claims order processing time on ePharmacy went down to under five minutes from 15 minutes previously.

The platform, which processes over 60,000 data entries daily, also runs on Google Kubernetes Engine, which ensures it handles prescription volume surges during peak demand periods.

Meanwhile, the cloud-based handoff platform provides instant access to critical patient information and streamlines workflow, also enabled by genAI.

Manipal has observed a 78% reduction in handover duration through this solution, from 90 minutes to 20 minutes, saving "millions of caregiver minutes monthly."

THE LARGER CONTEXT

This latest collaboration builds on Manipal's existing partnership with the cloud giant in 2022 around enabling virtual and remote care.

Google Cloud also made a similar genAI partnership with China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan. The hospital revealed in February last year that it developed AI assistants powered by MedLM to support physicians in creating cancer treatment plans and provide patients with answers to general health inquiries.

Australia-based health IT provider Magentus also collaborated with Google Cloud to deploy genAI functionality for its users, including the ability to extract insights from unstructured data and generate content.

In other related news, Google Cloud released last month new genAI capabilities in the Vertex AI platform and the availability of the new version of Gemini on the machine learning platform.
